 Cekis

Neslon Rivas aka Cekis career as a visual artist began in the city streets of his native Santiago, Chile.

He started painting murals while in high school, during which he was intrinsically influenced by the New York graffiti culture and the socialist propaganda murals created during the heavily marked political stage in the 1980’s.Over time, his work inspired a young generation of artists who spent their early years banned from all public spaces during the military take over that presided over Chile for 17 years. His work transcended communities, helping to create a massive appeal for a new street culture in Chile.

In 2004, Nelson moved to New York, seeking to grow more comprehensively as an artist. Lack of access to public walls in New York, as compared with Chile, led him to move towards creating work in the studio. Despite the restriction, the experience has allowed him to broaden his technique and develop an experimental and investigative body.
